To be effective as navigation elements, images must have some meaning. Further, their location in relation to other images on a page should have some logic. Bailey (2000) reported that images accompanied by text labels were more effective than images alone, while Niemela and Saarinen (2000) found that users were better able to find what they wanted when images were grouped together, sharing some similar visual properties (i.e. color).
