Roadside attractions are rather easy to navigate in person. Just follow the signs that read, "Next Exit." But on the Web, finding your way around a site depends on the ability to distinguish navigational functions from content.

Bailey (2000) reported that users had significant difficulties in identifying links from other text and images when no clear distinction was made. For instance, when users glance at the Bedrock City home page, it is not immediately discernable that the large images of the Flintstones characters are links to other pages on the site. Bailey suggests that Web designers who make their users "mine sweep" pages to find links are only creating barriers.
