  • This is an excellent and easy to use source as the entries are organized alphabetically as in a general encyclopedia. Explanations of how to use, the effectiveness, potential side effects, and how different contraceptive methods (barrier, oral, surgical, natural) work are listed under the entry for each one. Includes information regarding emergency contraception and abortion techniques. Also, the encyclopedia includes an index and bibliographic references, and a listing of pertinent organizations to contact for information regarding women's health.

Ammer, Christine. The new A to Z of Women's Health: a Concise Encyclopedia. New York: Facts on File, 2000. 4th Edition.

  • Found in UNC Chapel Hill's Health Sciences Library in the First Floor Reference Section. Call number WP13 A518a 2000.
  • This encyclopedia is extremely comprehensive and up to date as it is a revised fourth edition from the year 2000. This encyclopedia also includes detailed entries on birth control methods and advises that not all methods are appropriate for each woman. Also it includes informative entries on sexually transmitted diseases and which methods of birth control are most effective in preventing their transmission. There is a subject index as well.

Hatcher, R.A., et al. Contraceptive Technology. Irvington Population and Demography Ser. 17. New York: Irvington Publishers, 1998.

  • Found in UNC Chapel Hill's Health Sciences Library in the First Floor Reference Section. Call number WP 630 C764.
  • This serial is published biennially (includes revised series) and includes information on contraceptive methods used in the United states and also effectiveness of contraceptive methods and risks associated with different methods.

Planned Parenthood. All About Sex: A Family Resource on Sex and Sexuality. New York: Three Rivers Press: 1997.

  • Found in Chapel Hill Public Library. Call Number 613.95 All.
  • This family oriented resource includes sections on "Planning Our Families," and "Family Planning, Fertility, and Reproductive Rights," which go through steps to take on deciding upon an appropriate contraceptive method, including changing methods at different points of one's life. It also discusses contraceptive effectives, and risks associated with their use. This book contains an Index, Glossary, and a Resource Section of Organizations, Hotlines, and Websites to contact for more information.
