Counseling Resources: Books

trojan extended pleasure
The following works represent things to think about when considering birth control options to avoid pregnancy. They deal with abortion, single motherhood, and pregnancy counseling. Three of them are books written with intent to aid counselors in advising on abortion and pregnancy, and two are autobiographical; one account of abortion, and the other of teenage single motherhood.

Weisheit, Eldon. Abortion?: Resources for Pastoral Counseling. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1976.

  • Found in UNC Chapel Hill's Davis Library. Call number HQ767.3.W45.
  • Although this book was written in 1976, the content is still relevant for women considering abortion or emergency contraception. The author began writing the book as a resource for pregnant women considering abortion who were unable to talk to anybody about their dilemma, but then at the insistence of editors, became a book which serves not only this function, but also can be used as a guide for counselors in their sessions advising people who wished to discuss abortion. The author acknowledges that in the course of writing the work, he became much more anti-abortion, but he still manages to remain quite unbiased in presenting his ideas of what should be considered by a woman before committing to an abortion.

Brien, Joanna and Ida Fairbairn. Pregnancy and Abortion Counseling. London: Routledge, 1996.

  • Found in UNC Chapel Hill's Davis Library. Call number HQ767.4.B75 1996 c.1.
  • This book was written as a guide to pregnancy counselors in Great Britain. It analyzes why unintended pregnancy is so frequent when there are many contraceptive methods available and for this reason, it is included in this pathfinder.

Mayden, Bronwyn, Wendy Castro, and Megan Annitto. First Talk: A Teen Pregnancy Dialogue Among Latinos. Washington, D.C.: CWLA Press, 1999.

  • Found in UNC Chapel Hill's Davis Library. Call number HQ759.4.M39 1999 c.1.
  • This book focuses upon factors contributing to Latino adolescent pregnancy, and approaches to pregnancy prevention, and is also a resource for counselors. The reason it is included in this pathfinder is it includes four appendixes that provide a great amount of contact organizations and resources for the Latino population.

Riols, Noreen. Abortion: a woman's birthright. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1986.

  • Found in UNC Chapel Hill's Davis Library. Call number HQ767.25.R565 1986.
  • This is an autobiographical work by a woman who had an abortion. It is a moving account of her personal dilemma and agonizing decision, and gives the reader things to consider before arriving to the point of unintended pregnancy and having to make the decision of whether or not to have the baby.

Arnoldi, Katherine. The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom. New York: Hyperion, 1998.

  • Found in UNC Chapel Hill's Davis Library. Call number HQ759.4.A76 1998 c.1.
  • This autobiographical work is a great read, and an inspiring story for those young women who find themselves pregnant and alone.
