Planned Parenthood of Orange and Durham Counties’ (PPOD) Health Care Services include pregnancy testing, STI testing, Birth Control Prescribing, Abortion Services, and Gynecological Services.

Pregnancy Testing can be done within 24 hours by calling either center or on a walk in basis, and options counseling is also available in either center. STI screening and treatment is also possible in both centers. HIV testing is available, however treatment is not done, but recommended services are provided. Results are obtained either by calling the office or stopping by.

All methods of birth control are available and can be prescribed, including emergency contraception (medical abortion). Because of a grant for a new program called HOPE (Hormonal methods of birth control with an Optional Pelvic Exam) women can now receive oral contraceptives or the Depo-Provera shot without a pelvic exam. Also, PPOD has set up a state wide, toll free hotline that women can call to receive a prescription in the pharmacy of their choice for emergency contraception. (Of course the pharmacy has to agree to fill the order.)

Surgical abortion services are offered for first trimester pregnancies, and beyond 12 weeks, PPOD makes referrals to other providers in the area. Before the operation, women receive one on one counseling about their options and must return at a later date for the procedure. Women doctors perform all abortions.

Gynecological services include cancer screening for men and women, surgical abortions, and cryosurgery for abnormal pap smears. An OBGYN is available for specialized care with appointment. Also, a clinical psychologist is available for counseling in regards unplanned pregnancy, relationships, sexuality concerns, and depression.

PPOD also provides treatment of urinary tract infections, colds, earaches, sore throats, cholesterol screening, testicular exams, pap smears, breast exams, cancer screening, mid life counseling/treatment, school or employment physical exams, and flu shots. All medical records are completely confidential, and no information can be given without direct permission from the client.

Information pamphlets may be sent out, as well as information provided over the telephone. Each individual is regarded as unique and must be counseled about his or her options before any procedure is performed.

PPOD provides peer education for teens and will be starting several new programs this year for high school students in the area.

PPOD also performs what they call “mobile clinics.” For example, in the Fiesta del Pueblo in Carrboro, PPOD sets up a mobile clinic funded by money from HOPE where potential clients could register for birth control pills to be mailed to them. In the Women’s Center in Chapel Hill, mobile clinics are also held throughout the year, as well as in the Centro Hispano en Durham.

Services, such as prescriptions are called into a pharmacy close to where the client lives for their convenience. Also birth control pills and other contraceptives can be mailed to the client or picked up at either clinic.

There is an Internet presence. A link from the National Planned Parenthood Website exists, giving information about PPOD’s policies, beliefs, services, and goals.
