This class includes a Saturday full day workshop (May 21) and a break in the middle when you will be working on projects and engaging in online discussions. To help you keep track of sessions, readings, and due dates of your various assignments, a chronological schedule is provided below.

May 17 PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS OF THE COURSE

Introductions. Overview of Course, Planning for Assignments.
Readings: Begin reading textbook, Chapter 1. [Note: we will work our way through the textbook reading one or two chapters each day and referring back on occasion to chapters we have read earlier]

May 18 HISTORY AND CONTEXTS

A bit of history. Examination of the several literatures available. Introduction to Instructional Design
Readings: Read on needs assessment. Morrison chapter should be posted under Readings. Other readings on the topic are also acceptable.

LEARNING THEORIES AND LEARNING STYLES

How do you learn? How is adult learning different from learning as a child? What are the "millenials" like? How can learning theories help us design appropriate learning activities?
Readings: If access available, read Morrison, chapter 3: Learner and Contextual Analysis; otherwise, read a chapter from one of the listed textbooks (or similar title) on topic of learning theories and learning styles.
Visit: Visit to Davis Library to hear about UNC's library instructional program from Lisa Norberg.

May 20 INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

Domains of learning. ABCD method of writing objectives. Attention to performance, criteria, and condition.
Readings: Read chapter 5 in Morrison, if available, or read Rothwell, chapter 8 (soon to be available in Blackboard as pdf file).

Workshop Day
CONTEXT EXPLORATION - PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT

AM will be panel discussions and presentations. Emphasis on generalizing from the specific and on guiding discussions. PM will be on performance measurement.
Readings: Chapters 10-12 in Morrison, if available, or chapter 9 and 10 in Rothwell (pdf files on Blackboard) or other comparable reading on measuring the result of instruction.

May 23 LESSON PLAN DESIGN


Bringing elements together (needs assessment, learner analysis, setting objectives and determining assessments, developing a strategy and plan). Atention to time management. Use of technology in education and training situations. Discussion of online section of course.

May 25-June 13
TEACHING REPERTOIRE

Behavior approaches. Mastery Learning. Direct Instruction. Social Learning. Use of dyads and groups. Role Playing. Selecting, designing, developing active training methods. Facilities design.
Readings:Readings from Morrison, chapter 4, 6-9, or comparable alterative readings. Use this time to work on your independent reading assignment.
Activity:Reading/Posting on Blackboard every other day. Plan on 1 to 1 1/2 hours sessions.

Week 6    

June 14
LESSON PLANS AND INDEPENDENT LEARNING TOOLS

Implementation. Two panels for discussion of conceptual principles from textbook in comparison to actual examples.
Readings:: Textbook, chapters 7-9.

June 15 INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM PLANNING

More presentations and dicussion re audience response and evaluations. Review of instructional design principles applied to a program plan.
Readings: Textbook chapters on evaluation and program planning
