INLS 214: USER EDUCATION

Summer 2005

DESCRIPTION |  SYLLABUS |  ASSIGNMENTS |  SCHEDULE  |  RESOURCES

Course Description

This course is intended for LIS students (both LS and IS) who wish to learn more about education. The course will examine the history and context of LIS training programs (variously called bibliographic instruction, information literacy, user education, information management education, short courses in information technology use, and the like) through reading, speakers, field trips and active experimentation.

User education is an open course that may be tailored to student interests in a variety of professional contexts. The course will provide basic background knowledge and skill development in instructional design and delivery. Various career options will be explored. Sudents will be consulted on choice of speakers and field trips. An initial career exploration assignment will provide opportunity for examining options through reading, visits and observation, plus one or more interviews. Students will be encouraged to evaluate their own strengths to determine individualized ways to enact the educator/trainer role. The class as a whole will emphasize respect for differences and collaborative practices.
