Indexes and Abstracts

Imperial Double Headed Eagle. In addition to specific subject bibliographies, there are a few major works that endeavor to capture all the scholarly output related to the Slavic world. These bibliographic series are very broad in scope, collecting citations from virtually any academic discipline. These works have also gone digital and are far more current than the printed works that have been discussed. The caveat here is that the electronic sources are limited with regard to their retrospective nature. Older materials are being incorporated, but one must not assume that the absence of an electronic citation is the end of the search.

In addition to these specific subject Indexes and Abstracts, a quick check of Historical Abstracts would be quite useful.

  • American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (ABSEES). (Vol. 1, 1956-) American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. An alternate title for earlier volumes is the American Bibliography of Russian and East European Studies. Located in Davis Library Reference: Z2483. A65.
  • ABSEES Online (American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies). Urbana-Champaign, Illinois: University of Illinois Library. This bibliography is on the web at: http://eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/description.php?EIDID=11. This work catalogues the scholarly output of North America that involves Eastern Europe and the lands of the former Soviet Union. Citations refer to articles, monographs, chapters, reviews, and dissertations. Publication of a print version of this bibliography ended in the early 1990s as the electronic version came into being. The Online version is currently retrospective from the late 1980s.
  • European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies. (Vol. 1, 1975-) Paris : École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales: Institut d'Études Slaves. An alternate title for earlier volumes is European Bibliography of Soviet, East European and Slavonic Studies. Located in Davis Library Reference: Z2483. E94. This bibliography is on the web at: http://carousel.lis.uiuc.edu/%7Eebsees/search.html. This bibliography is essentially a European version of the ABSEES.
