ASSIGNMENT - Resource Review |
COURSE DESCRIPTION | SCHEDULE | SYLLABUS | RESOURCES | NEWS & NOTES |
Overview. For this assignment, you are asked to write two reviews of marketing resource material, if you are taking this course for one credit. One review should be of a book on marketing; the other can be either a journal devoted to marketing, or a website focused on the topic. If you are taking this course for one/half credit, you are asked to select either a book, journal or website and write a review of it; in other words, you need only do one review.Book. You may choose any book you like as long as its primary subject matter is some aspect of marketing and it's reasonably current. Probably the best choice for you would be a book relating marketing concept to some aspect of the LIS field you're particularly interested in, e.g., public librarianship, health science, or perhaps a book on social marketing or marketing in nonprofit agencies. Some possible choices may be found at Marketing Resources, Summer 2000.
Journal. Journal choices are not so rich but there are some valuable resources. Omitting some of the more research oriented journals (like Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and Research in Marketing, the following titles might be possibilities for you:
- Adbusters Magazine (a counter-culture publication probably easiest found in alternative bookstores -- fun to read)
- Advertising Age (also has a website - http://www.adage.com/- probably one you should all try to look at as it's a primary publication for marketers)
- Marketing Health Services
- MLS: Marketing Library Service (also has a website - www.infotoday.com/mls/mls.htm. Publication is very short -- 4-6 pages -- but has some useful information especially targeted to libraries)
- Marketing Management
- Sales and Marketing Management (another standard publication like AdAge that would be useful to know about)
Perhaps you'll find another title.
Website. You have a luxury of choices in selection of a website to review. See Marketing Resources, Summer 2000 for a sample of interesting and useful websites. I'm sure you will find many more.
Review Contents. For your review(s), provide an brief descriptive overview of the item (written for someone who not have looked at it) and then consider it from the perspective of the topics we've covered in the class, how you see it as potentially useful (or not) to you and/or other library/information folk. Pick out any special features that we should be aware of. Make sure you provide a full bibliographic citation to the work(s) you examine. End with your own critical evaluation. The review(s) does/do not have to be long -- perhaps the equivalent of 2-3 pages on SiteEdit. Post the URL for your review(s) on the Webboard.
Post choice(s) on Webboard by June 27. I hope we can get a good variety of resource choices.
Criteria for Grading. This assignment counts for 10% of your grade. Follow the directions above for what to include. It's always a good tip to separate objective description from subjective evaluation. It's also good to select items that you think will be of interest and value to your classmates.
