ASSIGNMENT - Webboard

Due: 2-3 times per week throughout semester

ASSIGNMENTS |  SCHEDULE |  SYLLABUS  |  RESOURCES |  NEWS & NOTES

Class participation is always valuable but even more so in a distance education class. The primary mechanism for participation will be the various bulletin boards on the Webboard for the class.

We will be moving rapidly through the course in the next five weeks -- covering between two and three chapters from your textbook each week. In order to make the course relevant to your interests, please provide at least one example for each chapter (1/2 credit folks can cut that amount in half) with the exception noted below. The examples should come from your own experience or reading and can be supportive or counter to what the text suggests. If you can't think of a good example, you may choose to critique one of the examples from the text. In addition, please provide some follow-up response to examples and comments posted by fellow classmates.

If all goes according to plan, we will read and discuss in person on June 13-14 the first four chapters of the text (Part I) so your postings will begin with chapter 5 in the following week. In general, I will expect you to have read the assigned material and to have made an initial posting before each live session (lst one on June 20).

Beginning with chapter 6 in the text you will be given an opportunity to choose a short exercise (to be done on SiteEdit). If you choose an exercise, for example, derived from chapter 6, you do not need to come up with an example for that chapter (but you should still read and respond to what your fellow classmates have said.) Essentially the short exercises are extended analytic examples with an opportunity to apply the concepts.

Grading Criteria. Webboard postings count for 20% of your grade. Your examples and comments should demonstrate that you have understood and can apply the concepts presented in the text. Your responses to your fellow students are an important demonstration of collegeality and will be valued as a contribution to making a learning community within the class. Critical comments offered in a professional manner are useful. Length is less important than the regularity and tone of your postings.

If you wish to make a private comment to me, you may of course email me directly (daniel@ils.unc.edu).
