Indexes and Abstracts

These databases are accessible through UNC Chapel Hill’s Libraries’ web page at: http://eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/  Through these databases you will get access articles to all of the important health journals, many of which provide full-text.

Science Direct via Elsevier

E-Indexes & Databases

This database offers abstracts and full-text of articles from a number of excellent health journals, including The Lancet, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Vaccine, and Public Health. Contains over 1,800 journals. It is helpful to limit search to a subject area, for example, “Nursing and Health Professions;” and it is useful in a search to use Boolean operators (and, or, and not) because a simple search on one word, say, “vaccine,” gets many results.

Pubmed/Medline

E-Indexes & Databases

Produced by the National Library of Medicine, this is the most comprehensive abstract and bibliographic source available for articles in allied health and biological sciences, with approximately 3,900 journals indexed.  This index has so many sources that it is an excellent source for citations.  About 67% of the records have abstracts, but relatively few full-text articles available. Some of the journals indexed are Science, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Nature, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Pubmed searches Medline and several other databases. (The results in Medline via Ovid have written at the end of each record a statement in red font indicating that Ink’s Health Science Library has complete, incomplete, or no holdings of the journal cited; the statement also indicates if it is also available online or through Inter Library Loan. You may find Medline easier to use. It will be discontinued )

CINAL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health)

E-Indexes & Databases

CINAL provides indexing and abstracting to over 1,600 journals in nursing and allied health, and full-text for 56 of these journals.  Its databases include a range of publications, from the New England Journal of Medicine to Public Health Reviews to Newsweek. Search features allow you to limit your search fields to a journal subset, for example, “Public Health” or “Health Promotion and Education,” and to special interest areas, for example, “Public Health.”
