THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN ANIMATION
A Pathfinder by Jason Sokoloff
AUDIO RECORDINGS

  • The Carl Stalling Project: Music From Warner Bros. Cartoons, 1936-1958. Burbank, Calif.: Warner Bros. Records, 1990. (Duke University Music Library Media Center CD 2932)
It is worth the effort to obtain this compact disc from Duke's music library, as it contains select recordings by the Warner Bros. studio orchestra that served as the background for countless Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck cartoons. Hearing the music without the character dialog lends newfound appreciation for the complexity of creating music for animated films.

  • The Carl Stalling Project Vol. 2: More Music From Warner Bros. Cartoons, 1939-1957. Burbank, Calif.: Warner Bros. Records, 1995. (Duke University Music Library Media Center CD 2933)
Like the previous entry, this recording is compelling for any music or cartoon buff. Tracks include finished performances that were used in actual films as well as rehearsal sessions. Detailed liner notes provide some historical background on the recordings.
