Dictionaries, Guides, and Encyclopedias

Each of these resources provides biographical information on her life and works.

Cullinan, Bernice E. and Diane G. Person, ed. The Continuum Encyclopedia of
Children’s Literature
. New York: The Continuum International Publishing Group
Inc., 2001. SILS Library Reference [PN1008. 5 .C66 2001 c.2]

The focus of this encyclopedia entry is on L’Engle’s younger years. It compares her written work to her home life (she based many of her books on her family). Included are a list of awards and a bibliography of her works.

Helbig, Alethea K. and Agnes Regan Pekins, ed. Dictionary of American Children’s
Fiction (1960-1984)
. New York: Greenwood Press, 1986. SILS Library Reference [PS374 .C454 H45 1986]

This provides a biography of her entire life, focusing specifically on her family, education, and employment. There is also a bibliography of her works, including when they were written and published.

Pendergast, Sarah and Tom Pendergast, ed. St. James Guide to Children’s Writers.
Detroit: St. James Press, 1999. SILS Library Reference [PN1009.A1 T9 1999]

This guide provides a very brief biography on her life and instead focuses on her works for both children and adults. There are also sections devoted to media adaptations of her work, manuscript collections, biographies, critical studies, and comments by Madeleine L’Engle.

Pflieger, Pat, ed. A Reference Guide to Modern Fantasy for Children. Westport, CT:
Greenwood Press, 1984. SILS Library Reference [PR830 .F3 R4 1984]

This work focuses on a variety of different fantasy writers. Though A Wrinkle in Time receives the most attention out of all of Madeleine L’Engle’s works, the guide does provide a wonderful commentary of the entire series (which includes A Swiftly Tilting Planet and A Wind at the Door).

Silvey, Anita, ed. The Essential Guide to Children’s Books and Their Creators. New
York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2002. SILS Library Reference [PS490 .E85
2002 c.1]

This guide provides an in-depth biography of her life and writing career. This guide spends more time on the biography and less on her written works. However, her more popular novels are touched on briefly.
