These interdisciplinary sources may be helpful in locating general articles related to an actor, film, director, or studio. Some of these databases provide full-text, while others only provide citations to an article. If a journal article of interest is found and full-text is not provided, check the library catalog and e-journal finder for print and electronic availability. Also check the journals list in this guide for further information on where to locate several popular film journals.

Academic Search Elite
  • Academic Search Elite indexes articles from 1984 in over 3,200 scholarly journals and includes The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Full text of articles published since 1990 are provided.
Art Index
  • This database contains citations to articles published since 1984. All articles published previous to this date may be found in Art Index Retrospective. Articles related to motion pictures from film journals are included. Full text is not provided, however UNC owns most of the film journals in the index.
Art Index Retrospective
  • This database is a historical version of Art Index which contains citations to articles published between 1929 and 1984. Articles related to motion pictures from film journals are included. Full text is not provided, however UNC owns most of the film journals in the index.
Expanded Academic ASAP
  • This database contains citations for articles from 1980 in more than 1,500 scholarly, trade, and general-interest publications, including The New York Times. Full text is available for some titles.
MLA International Bibliography
  • Published by the Modern Language Association, this database indexes a wide variety of topics. The index contains articles from thousands of world-wide journals dating back to 1963. Full text is not provided, however UNC owns most of the film journals in the index.
New York Times Historical
  • Full-text and full-image online version of The New York Times covering the paper’s beginning from 1851 until 1999. A great source for locating historical film reviews from when a classic movie was released.
