American Art Annual, it is now in its 57th edition.
The preface states that this is “a standard in the field of art, and an
indispensable reference to art museums, libraries, organizations, schools and
corporate art holdings.” The information is collected by direct communication whenever
possible. Section I is comprised of
alphabetical and geographical indexes. Section
II includes art schools, college and university departments of art, art history
and architecture in the US and Canada. Section
III is a comprehensive directory to art museums, schools abroad, state arts
councils, directors and supervisors of art education, art magazines, newspapers
and their critics, art scholarships and fellowships, open exhibitions, and
traveling exhibitions. Section IV
is three alphabetical indexes in the categories of organization, personnel, and
subject. A handy guide throughout
the book is a letter abbreviation system which appears in the margin of each
entry which categorizes the entry as (A) association, (C) corporate art, (L)

Serials This guide is normally published
on a monthly basis, except in July and August, when it is published bimonthly.
It is an international directory of art museums and exhibitions and is
the most current on this list. Because
this directory is laden with advertisements, the exhibition information

Arranged by state, each section has an alphabetical listing of
institutions by city, and very clear entries for each museum or gallery.
The text is complimented by photos of buildings, and artwork from the
collections, as well as a wonderful map of the state with the cities clearly

floor Reference This directory offers a broad sampling
of a few hundred of the world’s most famous and accomplished art museums.
It is very detailed for each museum, with anywhere from a couple to
several pages for each entry. Although
it lacks the comprehensiveness of other museum directories, it offers analysis
and depth within the history and overview of each museum.
It is self-described as “a response to a need for a serious research
source offering scholarly articles on the history and collections of the
world’s major museums and areas of museum history and museology.”

to find art exhibitions in the United States. It is current, organized and useful. The entries are clear and the exhibits for each museum or
gallery are listed by date. There
are no photos, but there are handy symbols and abbreviations for each entry
which convey a lot of helpful information for finding and selecting institutions
