About the Internet Training Institute ...

The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) has been awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Education to provide training in Internet technologies for school librarians and technologists in public schools in North Carolina. The instructional staff will include project directors Evelyn Daniel (daniel@ils.unc.edu), Coordinator of the School Library Media Program at UNC-CH, and Scott Barker (barker@ils.unc.edu), Director of Computing for SILS, joined by Jim Gogan, Director of Networking Systems for UNC-CH, plus a number of guest speakers.

Fifteen two-person teams of librarians and technologists were selected as participants. During the three-part workshop, participants will receive hands-on advanced training in telecommunications, network management, Internet resources, and multi-media applications. Model training programs for teachers on the use of the Internet for educational purposes and model lesson plans for collaborative teaching will be developed. Policy issues surrounding Internet use in K-12 schools will be explored.

Time and Location

The year-long training institute consists of three workshop sessions to be held in the Research Triangle Park area, plus Internet conferencing and email communication between sessions. Hands-on instruction will take place in a PC environment -- Windows 95 or NT. Sessions will be held on March 2-6 (Monday to Friday), June 24-26 (Wednesday to Friday) and October 15-16 (Thursday and Friday) from 9am to 5pm each day with an occasional evening activity. Hotel accommodations will be available nearby. Per diem ($71/day) lodging expenses plus lunches will be provided by the institute.
