Day 1 - Friday, June 16

Good background reading for today - Introduction and Part I (skip chapter 6 for now) of Kolb et al Organizational Behavior textbook. Don't do the exercises but get a feel for the kind of material included. Spend most of your time on the introduction and the first chapter.

In-class exercise. In groups, discuss the course requirements, objectives, assignments, your understanding of how the course will be conducted and similar items such as those listed in the exercise beginning on p. 11 in your text. Appoint a spokesperson/representative to participate in a mutual interview (class of instructor and instructor of class representatives). Rest of class observes and later comments in Portfolio as first entry. Does this experience of developing an explicit psychological learning contract model in any way that of developing a psychological contract in a work situation?

THEORIES OF MANAGING PEOPLE
  • Comments/suggestions from first exercise

  • Skills and Roles Needed by Managers

In-class nominal exercise and discussion. I'll give you some sticky notes. Spend a few minutes listing one to a sticky note what you think the roles and skills a manager should have. Affix your note to the designated space. Then walk around and see what others have written. See if you can group like things together. For general discussion, do you think the skills and roles a manager needs varies depending on the kind of organization? Tonight in your portfolio describe an organizational setting in which you would like to work and a managerial position within the organization, state which of the skills and roles seem to be most important. A self-assessment along the lines of the questions on pp. 38-39 could also be included.

In-class exercise. Take the Learning Style Inventory on pp. 46-47 and record your results. In groups, share your results and experiences with any other psychological instruments you may have taken (for example, the Keirsey temperament sorter or the Myers-Briggs. Discuss how the different temperaments and learning styles affect what managers should do.

    PREPARATION FOR TOMORROW

    • Do one or two short first entries in portfolio.
    • Read the introductory material on pp. 71 and 72 and the instructions for the Test of Imagination from Chapter 4.
    • Write story plots for four of the six pictures using the four questions provided.
    • Read chapter 5 (but skip the Roger Worsham case study), chapter 7 and chapter 9. We will introduce Problem Solving (topic of chapter 10 in class but we won't use same exercise so you can wait to read it)
    • Don't be anxious -- There'll be time to catch up during the coming week.
    • Ask instructor any questions you may have about expectations (yours or hers)
