The Cambridge History of American Literature contains a discussion of Pynchon's works in relation to his contemporaries. Also included is a timeline of events of American literature in the back. The resource is divided by time period and then further by style with sections on Drama (1940-1990), Fiction & Society (1940-1990), the "Southern Renaissance", Postmodern Fictions (1960-1990) and "Emergent Literatures" . Pynchon's works are primarily discussed in the postmodern fictions section. Chapter 1 of this section contains the most in depth information, and would be especially useful for comparison between Pynchon and John Barth. The index is extremely well documented and finding information on any of the five novels or short story collections.
