Encyclopedia of Dance. New York: Oxford University Press,
1998.
Davis Reference GV1585 .I586
This comprehensive work also contains information on film and
art. The outline of concepts in volume 6 provides the user with a
view of the conceptual structure of the work. Possible entries to
examine include Hindi films, Hinduism, Odissi, History of Indian
Dance, and India.
Stutley, Margaret. The Illustrated
Dictionary of Hindu Iconography. Boston: Routledge and Keegan
Paul, 1985.
Art Reference N8195 .A4 S78 1985
This book is a wonderful introduction to the significance of
Hindu art. The terms contained in this dictionary are defined in
others, but this work explains their connection to Hindu art. It
discusses the symbolism of certain elements, including dance
gestures, an important element of Hindu sculpture. This work also
contains a list of commonly used Sanskrit terms and their English
equivalents.
Punja, Shobita. Museums of India. New
York: Penguin Books India, 1998.
Art Reference AM73 .A2 P86 1998
The purpose of this guide is to expose the user to little known
museums in India. The guide is significant because these museums
house living traditions, creating a atmosphere different than
that which most travelers have experienced. In addition to a
listing of noted museums, the guidebook also contains a brief
cultural history of India and a reference section.
