Journal of the Short Story in English [Les Cahiers de la Nouvelle] 22 (Summer 1994).
Davis PR829.J6
The first four articles in this issue are about Byatt. They derive from a colloquium on the British Novel Since 1945 that was held on December 3–4, 1993, with Byatt as the guest of honor. JSSE is published in English and French; these articles are all in English. The first piece is an interview conducted by Jean-Louis Chevalier in which Byatt discusses several of her short stories (especially “The Chinese Lobster”) and Possession, as well as her choice of titles and her thoughts on language. The other articles are scholarly assessments of “The July Ghost,” “Racine and the Tablecloth,” and Sugar and Other Stories.
A visit to the UNC Library System’s Article Databases & More page will lead researchers to many databases listing newspapers, magazines, journals, and books or book chapters. Two databases that are especially helpful for Byatt researchers are:
MLA International Bibliography
This is probably the database that is most used by graduate students in the humanities. According to the Web site of the Modern Language Association: “The MLA International Bibliography provides a classified listing and subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics.... It is compiled by the staff of the MLA Office of Bibliographic Information Services with the cooperation of more than 100 contributing bibliographers in the United States and abroad. Available in print and in several electronic versions, the MLA International Bibliography annually indexes over 66,000 books and articles.” Searching under “Byatt” yields 143 hits (as of 16 November 2004), including some of the works cited in this pathfinder.
ABELL (Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature)
According to its Information Centre page, Literature Online “contains resources for over 14,000 authors, more than 350,000 literary works, and the full text of 136 specialist literature journals.” The Byatt Author Page (reached by typing “Byatt” into the Author search box) includes links to 143 critical works, 5 works by Byatt that were published in journals (with full text provided for 3 of them), a bibliography (only through 2001), 4 external Web sites, and a very helpful 2001 biographical essay written by Adam Frost for Literature Online. Performing a keyword search for “Byatt” yields 181 hits (as of 16 November 2004).
