Conducted and published relatively early in Byatt’s career (in terms of publication), this interview focuses on The Virgin in the Garden (1978), the first novel Byatt published after an eleven-year silence and the first novel in the Powerhouse tetralogy, which was not completed until 2003. While typically evasive when asked about her sister, the novelist Margaret Drabble (an interview with whom directly precedes this one in Janet Todd’s book), Byatt discusses her family life (including the tragic death of her son in 1972) and opines about such literary influences on her as Iris Murdoch and George Eliot.

In this interview, conducted after the publication of Babel Tower, Byatt and Miller focus on the Powerhouse Quartet, especially in terms of feminism. Angels and Insects and Possession are also mentioned.

This interview, conducted after the publication of Possession, focuses largely on that novel. It also deals with Byatt’s attitudes toward feminism, postmodernism, post-structuralism, vision and visual images, and the Powerhouse Quartet.
