Angels & Insects (1995). Directed by Philip Haas. Starring Mark Rylance, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Patsy Kensit.
UL Media Resources Center Videocassette 65-V5784
UNC's Media Resources Center, located at the R.B. House Undergraduate Library, has a non-circulating copy of the videocassette of this film, which is based on the novella Morpho Eugenia (published as part of Angels and Insects). Byatt acted as a consultant, and the film is both visually stunning and an excellent adaptation.
Possession (2002). Directed by Neil LaBute. Starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Aaron Eckhart, Jeremy Northam, and Jennifer Ehle.
Unfortunately, UNC does not own a copy of this adaptation of Byatt's 1990 novel. Those who have read the book will probably find this film disappointing, as the filmmaker was unable to translate the highly (inter)textual source material into his medium completely successfully. Changes were also made to some of the characters (e.g., the main character’s nationality is American, not British, in the film). However, people who have not read Possession may be entertained by LaBute's adaptation.
