Day 4 - Saturday, June 24

To be well prepared for today, please read the Negotiation Simulation discussed yesterday. Review your "win-win" negotiating notes and come prepared to participate.

The remainder of our day will be spent on the staffing function and performance appraisal. One or two short additional readings on staffing and personnel management issues are linked from the schedule and would be good to read before class.

In-class exercise. The class will be divided into three groups representing the academic, public and school librarians. Each group will be assigned a private meeting space to plan strategy. At the specific timed intervals, two groups at a time will enter the negotiating room and try to achieve their objectives under severe time pressure. After three rounds, we will all reassemble in the classroom and debrief. The break may be a bit delayed today.

In-class exercise. General class discussion in time available. In your portfolios, reflect on the kind of job that would attract you and be a "good fit." How helpful do you think the job description can be? If you have work experience, reflect on the induction process you underwent compared to that recommended in the Bryson reading. If you haven't worked before, write about your experiences as a new student at GSLIS and compare it to Bryson's recommendation. How might these induction (orientation) processes have been improved?

In-class exercise. In groups of 3, read the Plastimold Case and try your hand at a performance appraisal. One person should be Pat Simmons; one should be Alex Thompson. The other member should observe. In a second round the one playing Alex should take the part of Pat and the observer play Sam Reynolds. The former Pat is now the observer. If there is time for a third round, let Sam become Pat and the observer try either Alex or Sam.

In-class exercise. In a different group of three, read the Park Ranger Case and play the roles of Klaus, Martin, and an observer. Try to approach it as an issue in delegation, employee development and coaching. If you can, get it three rounds so that everyone can be Klaus, Martin, or the observer.
