AND INFORMATION CENTERS JUNE 24 SCHEDULE |
SCHEDULE | SYLLABUS | ASSIGNMENTS | RESOURCES | NEWS & NOTES |
The remainder of our day will be spent on the staffing function and
performance appraisal. One or two short additional readings on
staffing and personnel management issues are linked from the schedule
and would be good to read before class.
Day 4 - Saturday, June 24
To be well prepared for today, please read the Negotiation
Simulation discussed yesterday. Review your
"win-win" negotiating notes and come prepared to participate.
Aproximate Times and Topic
9:00 REVIEW
In-class exercise. The class will be divided into
three groups representing the academic, public and school
librarians. Each group will be assigned a private meeting space to plan
strategy. At the specific timed intervals, two groups at a time will
enter the negotiating room and try to achieve their objectives under
severe time pressure. After three rounds, we will all reassemble in the
classroom and debrief. The break may be a bit delayed today.

HUMAN RESOURCE PLANNING
In-class exercise. General class discussion in time
available. In your portfolios, reflect on the kind of job that would
attract you and be a "good fit." How helpful do you think the job
description can be? If you have work experience, reflect on the induction
process you underwent compared to that recommended in the Bryson
reading. If you haven't worked before, write about your experiences as a
new student at GSLIS and compare it to Bryson's recommendation. How might
these induction (orientation) processes have been improved?

PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND APPRAISAL
In-class exercise. In groups of 3, read the
Plastimold
Case and try your hand at a performance appraisal. One person
should be
Pat Simmons; one should be Alex Thompson. The other member should
observe. In a second round the one playing Alex should take the part of
Pat and the observer play Sam Reynolds. The former Pat is now the
observer. If there is time for a third round, let Sam become Pat and the
observer try either Alex or Sam.

2:45
THE MANAGER AS FACILITATOR
In-class exercise. In a different group of three,
read the Park Ranger
Case and play the roles of Klaus, Martin, and an
observer. Try to approach it as an issue in
delegation, employee development and
coaching. If you can, get it three rounds
so that everyone can be Klaus, Martin, or
the observer.
