Task 01: Basics


Task01 GRADE SHEET | Tasks due by 11:59 p.m. on due date.

Most of these tasks will be demonstrated over all of the basics lectures. Be careful not to jump too far ahead if you are not exactly comfortable with what you are doing.

Create a GitHub account. (choose a username you would put on a résumé) You will need to enter your github username into the intake form.

Login to the Class Blog and fill out the student intake form located there. I will add you to the blog a day or two before the first class.

Sign up for two Newsletters;  Choose another if you desire.

Take a screen shot of both newsletters, Alertbox and Technology Review when you get them in your inbox.
Name the screenshots: alertbox.png and techreview.png

Later, you will git push these screen shots to a folder in your Carolina CloudApps Source Control Account

1.3 Set up Virtual Private Network Connection on your laptop  download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN for Mac or Windows. You will also git pusha screen shot of your installed VPN app named vpn.png to your screen-shots folder in your directory Due 9/12/17
1.4 Sign up for Carolina CloudApps Due 9/12/17

Create two project/repositories at Carolina CloudApps Source Control:

2017-fall-inls-161-tasks Make this private. I will refer to this as your "tasks" repository
2017-fall-inls-161-website Make this public

Create a README.md file in each project/repository

Make sure you give me master role permissions on both repositories

In the tasks repository, create a directory and a sub-directory named 01-basics/screen-shots. This is where you will git push your three screenshot images. This will be the full path: 2017-fall-inls-161-tasks/01-basics/screen-shots/

1.6 Create a ssh key-pair on you laptop and paste your public ssh key into your Carolina CloudApp Source Control account Due 9/12/17
1.7 Install Git on your Laptop (if you are not already familiar with this, wait until after we talk about this in class) Due 9/12/17
1.8 SEE GRADE SHEET for what you need to know: Show me, one-on-one, some git and command skills by the end of the semester. (I want to make sure you are not always taking the easy way out using drag and drop to move files.)  I will also want to see you develop your Markdown skills by the end of the semester, so during class practice sessions, I will direct you to edit some README.md files using markdown. Markdown is EASY.  Do this awesome Markdown tutorial or learn it with this cheatsheet. (We will continue to work with, git, unix, and markdown over the the entire semester, so this due date is open ended. You may also meet with me for office hours if you need extra help. Due by the end of the semester
