Creating objects

• We can create our own graphics,

• if we understand what the tools can do for us

Our task is to:

1. using any combination of drawing objects,
2. group them together to create a new single object that will be a logo representing our notional publishing company
3. and insert the new object in the first page of the conclusion

So, first we find an object - perhaps inserting a book icon immediately in front of the first word of the second paragraph on that page.

It came in as an object In Line with Text, so we modified its wrapping to tight, so that it floats above the text, but interacts with it.

We then add two more icons by using the insert tab, two diagrams that seem to relate to information flow and organizational structure. They both come in floating above the text, and we wrap them to also be wrapped tight with the surrounding text.

We now have three objects to deal with and we want to have a single object, so we group the three into a single object.

Now, with a new, single object, we can make sure it wraps exactly as we want it to, and is positioned exactly where we want it to be. In this instance, we wanted it imbedded in the text, wrapped tightly, and positioned in a horizontal location centered relative to the column, and a vertical location centered relative to the page.

We did this so that the logo will remain aligned in the center of the column of text and in the center of this page, no matter what paper size we use and page orientation we may use in the future. The object will stay correctly aligned.

We did this all because we needed something that we didn't have, in order for our document to work for the eventual user/reader. We did not go out and find the optimal solution; the tools at our disposal in this program satisficed for our needs.

We can use this new understanding to move on to working with other graphic objects.
