Information Management for Organizational Effectiveness

Understanding the Individual in the Organization

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your perception of how the individual fits into an organization in terms of identity, ethics, and loyalty.

TASK - Understanding the Individual by Considering Ethics

Fifteen percent of the grade for this class will come from a visual, narrated presentation that displays your understanding of the individual in the organization by discussing individual ethical relationships to organizational realities.

For this assignment, read the the discussion on the ACM's effort to update its Software Engineering Code of Ethics and think about the ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct as it now exists, by creating a professional presentation to capture your thoughts.
This single presentation should be an image-heavy, self-running, narrated PowerPoint presentation of at least five, but no more than ten minutes, in length. The voices of all the members of the group should be heard on the presentation.

You may consult additional sources as you wish, but if you do, remember to include the citations in a bibliography slide at the end of your presentation. Your presentation will be evaluated according to your analysis of the decisions an individual would have had to have made in the situation described below.

You may use generative AI tools to assist the creation of your talk, but do credit them as you would any other reference you cite. Take a look at APA Generative AI Citiation Guidance for advice on doing this well.

This code is pretty all inclusive. Respond to it in terms of the following questions.

  1. You may not be a member of ACM and your future job may not be necessarily understood to be a "computer professional," but is this code meaningful to you and could you live with it as your guidelines? Analyze how you relate to the code and how you think it may apply to you?
  2. Which of the first three major components seems most relevant to you and to what you think you might be doing in the future? Be specific about which is the most important to you and why you feel it is the most important?
    • general ethical principles
    • professional responsibilities
    • professional leadership responsibilities
  3. Each of the first three major components includes a set of subcomponents. As you did with the previous question, state which subprinciple resonates the strongest for you. The subprinciple does not have to be one of the subprinciples within the major group you identified in part 2, but be clear why you feel it is the most relevant to you and to your hoped-for future.
  4. Finally, analyze the Code in its entirety. Is it workable; is it relevant; is it meaningful; is it a good framework for structuring your professional life? What of it would you use and what of it would you choose to disregard?

STANDARD

Grade What it means A description of what it means
A
14.025 or more
Mastery in understanding the individual perspective in terms of identity, ethics, and loyalty at the highest level of attainment that can reasonably be expected A well-articulated discussion of the topic, well narrated in a professional voice showing mastery in understanding the ethical issues facing the individual in an organizational setting. It shows evidence of your having absorbed all of the key points of the individual module.
A-
14.024 to 13.425
A totally acceptable performance demonstrating an adequate level of understanding the individual in terms of identity, ethics, and loyalty An insightful discussion of the topic; a well-articulated, well-illustrated discussion. It is extremely good, but leaves the reader feeling that your understanding of the issues is perhaps a bit less than professionally sophisticated, in terms of depth of analysis.
B+
13.425 to 12.975
An insightful discussion of the topic; a well-articulated, well-illustrated discussion. Really good, but perhaps a bit shallower in terms of your understanding one or more of the contexts; you may not have used relevant examples to explain your points; you may not have fully addressed all the elements requested
B
12.974 to 12.375
An insightful discussion of the topic; a well-articulated, well-illustrated discussion. Good, but perhaps a bit shallower in terms of your understanding several variants of the contexts; your graphics may not have well-supported your points; you may not have fully addressed all the elements requested; you did not use terminology that we discussed in the module sessions
B-
12.374 to 11.925
Good, but not as good as it could have been; you may not have fully addressed all the elements requested
C+
11.924 to 11.475
A marginal performance. Looked too much like a typical Canva/Google Slides presentation, and not enough like a clear, crisp, professional presentation. The viewer can easily be under the impression that the components of the task had been parceled out to group members, and then stiched together for the submission.
or
OK, in terms of grasping the essentials, but not good in terms of articulating your understanding in a manner that is easy to understand and appreciate
C
11.474 to 10.875
A disconnected, stylistically variable, discussion leaving the impression that the components of the task had been parceled out to group members, and then stitched together for the submission.
or
You seem to understand the essential points of the module, but you did not articulate your understanding well enough to do more than the minimum
C-
10.874 to 10.425
It's time to start wondering if you missed something important, if you misunderstood the task, if you did not understand the key elements
D+
10.424 to 9.975
This is a warning that you are not currently on the right path; you might need to have a discussion with the instructor about this performance
D
9.974 to 8.925
There are indications that you were present and that you sort of grasped what we had discussed, but missed the key points to such a degree that you really need to re-group and catch up
F
less than 8.924
For whatever reasons, an unacceptable performance If it's unacceptable, it is unacceptable; it should be as obvious to you as it is to the instructor
