Tools for Information Literacy Syllabus - Evaluation

Evaluation measures

This class does not have any exams (though there will be several short one question quizzes), but there are tasks to do and there will be an in-class final task to do during the date and hours of the final exam. Grades are based on

  1. the results of your completion of five tasks
  2. and on the value you add to your peers learning in class .

Each task will focus on the topic listed in the chart below, but each succeeding task will build on the skills learned in the ones which come prior to it.

Session notes

These will include links to a variety of additional resources, to more fully explain or expand on topics discussed in the notes. Some of the linked sources may include:

  • online documentation from UNC's Information Technology Services (especially the help link),
  • other information sources available via the Web,
  • or readings that will be sent to you as email attachments or as blog posts.

Pay attention to the schedule and to the Canvas site. If there is something that you should read prior to class, it will be included on the session notes for the session prior to the class you will be preparing for. You would do well to look over the linked readings prior to coming to class.

This will be a performance-oriented class

Your grade will be determined by the proficiency you show on five tasks. Though they are graded evaluations, they are also good learning experiences and can also be fun to do.
Your lab/recitation instructors will be your graders, so you will want to work most closely with them.

task worth of total
basics 06%
web development 31%
document control 16%
data control 26%
presentations 11%
Value Added 10%

Due dates

Pay attention to the due dates. Tasks should be turned in by the end of the day they are due. Deadlines are listed for your time management purposes; there is no automatic loss of points for lateness. The only exception is the final task which must be turned on time because this task takes the place of a final exam.

If you finish a task early and wish to have it looked over for completeness, the lab/recitation instructors will do so and will provide you feedback so that you may alter things if necessary. Of course, this can only be done if you provide it to us early enough and if we have the time available in our schedules. If you finish a task on time or late, the grade will be based on the delivered product.

If circumstances render you unable to turn in a task on time, you may negotiate a new, later, delivery date. If you negotiate a new delivery date and meet it, you will suffer no negative consequences. If you do not negotiate a new delivery date, or if you miss your negotiated date, you run the risk that there will not be time enough to give your submission its due consideration. You always have the opportunity to discuss any circumstances that conspire to hinder your ability to turn in an assignment on time.

You will add value by enhancing the learning environment for your fellow students

You will add value to your peers' experience by contributing in class and within the Canvas discussion space.

Adding Value includes asking questions about topics in such a way that your question and the answer also help your fellow classmates.
You can ask questions in lectures or recitations, or via the Canvas inbox . Your instructors will respond directly to each question asked.

Also, if they think the rest of the class can benefit from the question and answer, they will reformat the question to preserve the anonymity of the asker and post both question and response in a Canvas discussion posting, so that everyone can benefit.
