Foundations of Information Science

Pioneers of Information Science

Today, we have two videos.

The first is about an individual who is here called the "Father of the Information Age".

Claude Shannon

If you are curious, and only if you are seriously curious, you might want to look at his original article. It has been cited over 64,000 times.

Shannon, C. E. (1948). A Mathematical Theory of Communication.
The Bell System Technical Journal, 27, 379-423, 623-656.

In the second, Dr. Jenna Hartel intoduces us to one of the important papers in the field we are considering, and to the author.

Since we watched a discussion of Marcia Bates' paper, we might want to read it ourselves.

Bates, M. J. (1999). The invisible substrate of information science. Journal of the American society for information science, 50(12), 1043-1050.

A few more to consider if you want to get deeper into the history.

Some books about early thinkers, more in the world of working with information than the science of it, but illustrative of the foundations.
  1. THE MAN FROM THE FUTURE: The Visionary Life of John von Neumann
  2. Grace Hopper and the Invention of the Information Age
And an article to read about the evolution of thinking in the field of information science.

Hartel, J. (2019). Turn, turn, turn. In Proceedings of CoLIS, the Tenth International Conference on Conceptions of Library and Information Science, Ljubljana, Slovenia, June 16-19, 2019. Information Research, 24(4)

Or, you may find watching a video is a better method.
