North Carolina Aquariums:
The Aquariums were established in 1976 to promote an awareness, understanding, appreciation,
and conservation of the diverse natural and cultural resources associated with North Carolina's
ocean, estuaries, rivers, streams, and other aquatic environments.
North Carolina Coastal Federation:
The North Carolina Coastal Federation was founded in 1982 by eight grassroots groups concerned
with local coastal issues. NCCF is a non-profit, tax exempt organization which seeks to provide citizens
and groups with the assistance needed to take an active role in the wise management of North Carolina's
coastal water quality and natural resources.North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources:
The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is the lead stewardship agency
for the preservation and protection of North Carolina's outstanding natural resources. The organization,
which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect
air quality, water quality, and the public's health.North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve:
The North Carolina Coastal Reserve Program, within the Division of Coastal Management, was
authorized by the NC General Assembly in 1989 to protect unique coastal sites. The program
includes the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve, part of the National Estuarine
Research Reserve system, which the Division manages in partnership with the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration under the Coastal Zone Management Act.North Carolina Sea Grant:
Through research, education and outreach programs, North Carolina Sea Grant works with individuals,
groups, government agencies and businesses to develop an understanding of the state's coastal environment
and promote the sustainable use of marine resources.Albemare-Pamlico National Estuary Program:
The Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Program - formerly known as the Albemarle-Pamlico Estuarine
Study (APES), was among the first National Estuary Programs established by the US EPA in 1987.
The mission of the APNEP is to identify, restore, and protect the significant resources of the Albemarle-
Pamlico estuarine system.North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state's
marine and estuarine resources. DMF is comprised of nine sections that collectively carry out this mandate.
National Association of Marine Labs:
The National Association of Marine Laboratories, organized in the late 1980's, is a nonprofit organization of
over 120 members employing more than 10,000 scientists, engineers, and professionals and representing
marine and Great Lakes laboratories stretching from Guam to Bermuda and Alaska to Puerto Rico.National Estuarine Reserve Database:
The National Estuarine Research Reserve System is a network of protected areas established for long-
term research, education and stewardship. This partnership program between NOAA and the coastal
states protects more than one million acres of estuarine land and water, which provides essential habitat
for wildlife; offers educational opportunities for students, teachers and the public; and serves as living
laboratories for scientists.National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association
