Buying a Server - the hardware
Typical server today is Pentium Pro or Pentium II based. The fastest processor you can afford is good. If NT, perhaps multiple processors.
Typically want at least 128MB of RAM, more is always better. This RAM will be used for file caching.
Remember though, if it is just a file server than no processing is taking place on the server, so “I/O” may be the most important thing….
- Fast network card, fast BUS (PCI), fast disk (Ultra Wide SCSI), etc.
