INLS 131: MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION AGENCIES

Assignment 2:
PORTFOLIO

fALL 1999

Assignment Due: Various Dates. (To be turned in three times during semester -- Final due date for grading purposes = Nov. 29.

Purpose. The Portfolio is a notebook for you to communicate with me your personal reflections about the material discussed in the course, the readings and exercises, your responses to questions posed in the "thinking ahead" notes for each class, and other thoughts you may have about managing and the world of work.

Format. You may use any format you choose. For example, you may treat it as a diary or journal and create entries for each class as separate word processed documents, or you may treat it as a series of letters or memos written directly to me, or you may use a notebook and record your entries in it. It is easier for me to read word processed work than handwritten work but if you have a strong preference for hand writing and your writing is reasonably legible I will accept it in this form.

Frequency of Entry. You should try to make an entry for each class beginning with Sept. 6 through Nov. 24 inclusive. However, if you skip one or two entries you will be forgiven. More than two could be problematic.

Length of Entry. I expect the length will vary. Sometimes you will have more to say than other times. Some folks are more terse than others. Aim for about a page and a half of double spaced word processed text for each entry; more than 4 pages is probably too much. This is a rough guideline only.

Evaluative Criteria. Through your reflections it should be possible to see that you have understood the concepts we have read and discussed, that you have applied these concepts to your own experiences and observations in an analytical way. and that you have exercised your judgment about situations based on rational criteria.

Feedback and Grading. My expectation is that your work will be acceptable at a graduate level. This translates to a letter grade of P. I will let you know if the level of your work is below that level. The grade should be less important to you than the feedback from me in the form of a conversation about what you have written.
