INLS 131: MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION AGENCIES

Schedule - Fall 1999

Discussion Forum

The schedule below is incomplete and tentative due to the fact that your instructor is out of the country. I will be back for class on Aug. 30th (perhaps not very alert but happy to be with you). I will use your responses on the student information form and your first organizational description assignment to create a class as tailored to your needs and interests as possible while still fulfilling the requirements of the program. You will want to check this schedule page frequently throughout the semester as the class unfolds.

There is a listserv for the class. Please go to the Center for Instructional Technology page to subscribe (or unsubscribe) to a list. The name of the list is 131.

Aug. 18 - Aug. 25

Aug. 18

SHORT SESSION TO LOCATE COURSE MATERIALS

Begin work on first assignment -- Organizational Description.
Readings: Examine the Resources page and check out one or two of the books on the reserve reading list. Select one of the management journals listed, either print or online, and analyze one or two issues.
Listserv and Discussion Board: Subscribe to the listserv for this class (see directions on Syllabus page). Go to the Discussion Board and send a brief message telling members of the class a bit about yourself. Send another message in a day or so naming the organization you choose to describe for your first assignment.
Optional: If you like, you may send an email to me -- daniel@ils.unc.edu. I will try to check my mail at least once or twice while I am in Bangkok. It would be nice to have a friendly message from one or two folks in the 131 class.

Aug. 23
and 25

NO CLASS

Work on assignments and activities described above.
Don't worry if you have lots of questions about the assignment. Do the best you can with the help of your classmates. The assignment is primarily a means for me to learn about you in relation to our topic than to test you in any way.

Aug. 30 - Sept. 1

Aug. 30

INTRODUCTIONS, OVERVIEW OF CLASS

This is our real first class. We will have a chance to meet one another. I will go over the course materials and the assignments and answer any questions you may have. We may start the process of forming groups and teams. One group will be randomly organized; a second group will be based on your career interests.

Sept. 1

A TASTE OF MANAGEMENT ISSUES

What do managers do all day? What makes a good manager? Are managers really necessary?
Readings: Read some introductory material on management.

Sept. 6 No Class - Labor Day

Sept. 8
