An Ocracoke Ghost Story (79-year-old female, Ocracoke, NC)

Audio:

I have heard 'em talk, the older people talk about it, talk about seein' a person and seein' 'em after they're dead, you know, been dead or something. But I've never seen it. But I had a--now think about this. I had a little sister that she got sick. She had typhoid fever. And she didn't live very long. I think she lived about two weeks. But, she, I took care of her a lot, she thought a lot of me, went ever'where I went. Something that's close to you like that. Well, while she was sick or something, see, we went, we didn't have any 'lectric, we had kerosene lamps, so we burn the lamp shade, and it was getting dark and we needed to get a lamp shade, so I went to the store to get the lamp shade. And comin' along back up the road, I heard something behind me, I don't know what it was. But I turned around and looked, and I didn't see nothing but a big white bunch of stuff. Somethin' white. And so I kept on going, and walking and walking, and I turned around and looked, and it was still behind me. Just a white, like a cloud or somethin', somethin' like a cloud. And I never could find out what it was. But it scared me when I seen it was chasing me. And I didn't run, I didn't walk in that house, I run and busted right through that door. I was so scared. And my mother said, "What is wrong with you?" I said, "Do you see anything white back of me?" And she didn't know what I was talkin' about. And she, "I didn't see nothing." I said, "It's just somethin' white, I don't know what it was, somethin' white." And she, she thought maybe, I don't know, I was dreaming or whatever. She said, "What's wrong with you?" But I couldn't get it off my mind, what it was. I could not get it off my mind. And it just stayed there. And the next day, the next day, I got up that morning, it was kinda late, and went through the living room, and when I looked, I, the couch, there was a couch in that living room, the kind that didn't have no backs on 'em, I saw a great big white thing on that couch, and that's the first thing that I thought of was that white thing that was like a big cloud. My sister had died and they had a sheet over her. And I screamed, and they all run to see what was wrong with me, and I said, "Mommie," I said, "that's that thing that was going back of me last night." And they had to calm me down. Now that's all I know, I know that was, now that was that, and I weren't thinkin' about it either. It happened, and I wasn't thinkin' about it.
