  • Questions, Comments, etc. relative to Chapter 2 - Skills and Roles of a Manager
  • Questions, comments, etc. relative to Chapter 3 - the Learner and the Learning Organization
  • Achievement, Affiliation and Power Motivations (McClelland's Theory of Motivation

In-class exercise. In trios or teams grouped on like TAT pictures chosen for analysis, exchange stories and score the imagery in the stories on the presence of indicators of achievement, power and affiliation motivations. General discussion of similiarities and differences in the motivational concerns perceived in the stories and the relevance or importance of these concerns in the context of different jobs. Follow-up on the discussion in your portfolio tonight.

In-class nominal exercise and discussion. Please read the case individually and then discuss in groups. Try to relate your discussion to the concepts described in the text. For your portfolio, do the personal application assignment described on pp. 121-122.

In-class exercise. In groups of three or four, we will do the Active Listening Exercise described on pp. 179-184 of the text. For your portfolio entry tonight or subsequently: If you are currently working, take the Communication Climate Inventory from the text and report your results. (by the way, these concepts apply to a marriage or parent-child relationship or roommate arrangement as well if you're not working and want to try the Inventory anyway). Comment on your experiences with defensive communication and your experiments with active listening.

      In-class exercise. Inner-Outer Exercise, pp. 228 - 231. In your portfolio, describe your experiences (good and bad) in working with groups. Can you apply the concepts described in the book and experienced in the exercise to analyzing your past experience and recommending steps you can take for better experiences in the future?
