Many great ideas are never broadly adopted. One reason that it is difficult to convert to a new technology when there is a steep learning curve involved in learning the new system.

What are the ways that academic research typically reaches the business world? (RB example) Is it typically vendor-sponsored research or corporate spin-offs? What work is being done to get open source applications into the business environment (Apache, Linux and mySQL are are widely used -- what makes them special?). What efforts are being made to move technology into real-world applications?
