INLS 62 Class Notes

Day 19:  Nov 1

Note: Exam period will be Dec 8; 8-11 am

  1. One minute papers

Lots of RB comments

Fedstats as portal to 100+ federal stat agencies;  lots of stat info available;  who uses it and why?

Is the RB version of film db available?  Why not used more?

The BLS design evolved to more info but also is very cluttered

Can we get BLS or fedstats to answer the local questions? (e.g., NC?)

I am learning though this process that interaction with the user is the most important thing that a technician can do.

I am curious as to how difficult it is to create a precise naming schema so that you can organize the data for these websites that will not frustrate the users when they are browsing.

How long it takes to create a typical database and how you go about it? How did we build it ? Are UNC students able to create these databases? And can it be viewed on the web such as for our website?

These different java interfaces for the different databases seems to be very useful by cutting up the collection into useful, more managable pieces. These different java interfaces for the different databases seems to be very useful by cutting up the collection into useful, more managable pieces.

Information heavy home page vs intro home page. See reasons for both and wondering what real customer wants are vs customer needs. I equate the problem to the earleir discussion about the open video problem of users and different frame speeds.

3.I/O devices…eyes as input devices

keyboards:  QWERTY vs alternative----the power of installed base; only new applications will force changes (e.g., phones)

pointing devices: mouse dominates, but wide open for alternatives given learning curve (see Box 9.1 for list)

              direct control: stylus, touchscreen

              indirect control: mouse, joystick

4. One minute paper:  post to blog

    1. main point you learned today
    2. main unanswered question you left class with
