HCI Seminar 357
Day 9 Notes
Oct. 17, 2001
RAVE update
1. On-minute papers
2. show eye-tracking demo
3. Interface tour:
Ron Brown
4. Discuss user studies (due today)
5. Speech
Yankelovich et al.
Example of user testing with iterative improvements between subjects
Mail, calendar, question answering (weather, stocks) tasks with a prototype customized system closely coupled to the tasks
Different interaction style than GUI..toward interpersonal conversation
Error handling a crucial research problem
Types of system errors: recognition (rejection, substitution, insertion) and design solutions
Need for verification in the interaction cycle, new surrogates?
Karat et al
Example of controlled comparison user study (with extensions)—note design
Text composition and transcription tasks with three commercial systems
Keyboard-mouse much faster, due to error correction; also higher satisfaction, no comp quality differences
Keyboard-mouse errors are user errors, speech errors are system errors
Error correction strategies needed (word misrecognition, phrase misrecognition, command misrecognitions, dictation as command misrecognitions)
Theme for discussion: Error detection and correction are important elements of interaction. Errors shape/change user mental models and expectations, in turn shaping behavior. Factor into theory of interactivity; Consider implications for design
5.5. Assignment: Conduct some searches on various engines….examine results with the idea of improving google’s results display
6. Readings for next meeting:
Tilebars: Read Hearst (ACM DL)
7. One-minute paper
What was the big point you learned in class today?
