Experts will learn/tolerate bad interfaces if the content is good
The Browse page provides a basic overview of type of content available
The collection is indexed by several attributes we think will be useful to users with different purposes, such as genre, color, sound, and duration
The number of segments found in each category are shown to help the user better understand the scope of the collection
There are several ways to search, again to be useful for users with different purposes
The Attribute Search is similar to browse, but enables user to be more specific about what they are looking for and to combine attribute categories
The Text Search is more useful for a user with a focused interest on a given topic
Here they can search using free text or keywords that exist in the database
The same Search results page is displayed for either a search or browse request and enables the user to quickly find good candidates for their needs by showing the:
Segment title
Duration
Available formats (and filesizes for each)
And, by mousing over the segment details icon, a Description of the segment
The user can also download a video segment directly from this page, or click the details icon to see complete details for the segment
The segment details and source video pages show all the metadata for segment
In addition, if it is available ...
The user can read the segment’s transcript text ...
Or see a preview of the segment.
Only some segments currently have previews but we intend to create previews for the entire collection over time.
As you can see, we currently provide a storyboard preview but plan to add slideshow and fastforward previews to give users more options
The previews lead into my next topic, which is the work we are currently doing with video surrogates.
