Report from JCDL PC

1. One minute papers

Points

Metadata is one level of interoperation

Tension between keeping metadata (and systems) simple and making it (them) very expressive

Can’t just create info objects, must create access mechanisms (e.g., metadata)

DC, OIA, XML, all important open source inititives

Human generated metadata has problems (accuracy and scale)

Metadata key to interactive interfaces

Questions

Can metadata be copyrighted?

Isn’t XML the interface server solution?

How are DC updates/changes handled in legacy systems/data?

Can’t metadata be created along with content?

Can we use formal protocols to go social interoperation? [law, e-rules]
