180 Day 17 Notes

March 19, 2001

Look at Revised syllabus for rest of term!

1.      One minute papers

Main Point

Most info packages are static

Somebody has to organize all this stuff—guess it is us!

Everyone is an IA—some get paid to do it

Q:

Are there dynamic organizational structures?

So agencies/companies do needs assessments before designing web sites?

Where did the hierarchical folder/file directory structure come from?

Major IA firms?

Are color codes for hyperlinks behavior?  (simple binary status)

How to distinguish objects with behavior (need a new word?)

How long does it take humans to adapt to new tech? (recall Rogers)

Where does XML fit into IA?

Are people ready for objects with behavior?

2.      Discussion of the midterm projects

2.1. General observations

            distinguish physical and conceptual structures

structure and markup goal is communication and interaction

note in the files I sent back, sometimes I changed your text color—simply like an underline in paper

2.2.  Book structure

Consider hierarchical depth—3-5 levels typical

Auto parsing of your markup was the point of question 2

DTD vs the markup (a scheme vs the ‘tagging’)

Links most common online addition---consider link typing

2.3.  TV structure

Temporal nature of TV---What does 10 seconds mean?

Mulitple channels requires parallel markups

The camera is a player---number of cameras, movements, zooms, etc. (point of view?)

How did you get such details? (record and play back in slowmo?)

2.4.  Web

Lots of personal ‘impressions’…consider sectors and links (range, mode for each)

LC:  S=1-23, 4    L=13-25, 25

AM: S=1-14, 4,3 tied   L=1-31, 31

Fedstats: S=2-8; 5    L=12-19; 15

BLS: S=3-16; 5  L=72-88; 77

UNC: S=2-24; 5   L=22-28; 27

SILS: S=1-9; 4    L=14-73; 64

Should web sites have graphics?

Are repeated links on same page helpful? Ever? When?

Some of you react strongly to colors

Eye movement---arcs vs angles

Evolution of sites—AM changed over the time of the assignment (where do old sites go?)

Organizations: parents and children; topic and/or task

Messages: corporate seem to work, e.g., Disneyà fun for sale

Search engines---trying to find a mission and a business model

3 Reading discussions this week

Tibbo discussion: Sarah Auman

Roloff discussion: Andre Burton

5.The one-minute paper

What was the big point you learned in class today?

What is the main, unanswered question you leave class with today?
