180 Day 18 Notes

March 30, 2000

One Minute Papers

Big Point

Move toward user-centered rather than info-centered services

Blurring of primary/secondary resources and services

Much of the tech work in info sci was rooted in scientific info (but note cultural informatics)

Questions

Can educators prepare students for advanced info services (and what are roles of info specialists)?

How can L/I centers afford to pay for proactive services? Are there cost studies of training patrons to save time later?

Is automatic abstracting really possible?  What works? How does it work with websites?

How to balance user profiles and situational aspect of need?

With full text online, won’t the abstracts become the users’ queries?
