1. One-Minute papers
Main point
Data/info/know distinctions
Definitions are slippery (many are bothered by this)..too ephemeral
Consider the intention (goal) behind the sender’s message
The medium and message are highly interdependent
Regeneration versus retrieval
Context is crucial to definitions, stronger: context is everything
Questions
What will be impact of DLs on our notions about intelligence?
7 plus/minus two?
How is homeostasis affecting our society today?
Do TV viewing and Internet surfing create a com Balance for active/passive?
TV bringing back oral tradition?? (lots of disagreement on this)
Are stories being saved or perverted for entertainment purposes?
(what else?)
How do online communities police themselves (maintain homeostasis)?
How can we shift education from info to knowledge? (constructivists
claim to know ;-)
My question to class: Why should we be any more surprised that meanings (concepts) for words are any more concrete than the meanings in the paint that makes up Mona Lisa’s smile? This does not mean we should not define words—it takes courage to do so. Consider Rogers’ definitions and how dissatisfying they can be.
