Big Points
There is nothing novel about persuasion (ancient skill)
No longer possible to lead through power (mandate, coercion) alone—need cognitive AND affective strategies to lead
Filter techniques for email
Combine Conger & Tannen to see change in management: combine Japanese success and women in workforce
Usability testing is only ONE aspect of design (the goals of design are not testing)
Email burden is growing
Persuasion (ala Conger) seems to be a female viewpoint—consensus vs leadership
Persuasion has many connotations—from temptation (advertising) to collaboration
Automatic email replies should be developed (beyond ‘vacation’)
Efficiency does not equal effectiveness
We think while we listen and talk—we are mentally full duplex
Rememberance agents
Anecdotes and visual imagery are powerful adjuncts (forms?) of communication

How can (should?) universities (or companies) adapt so that profs do not spend all their time answering email from students and ‘outsiders’?
What/when are the media reviews?
How many of us answer email as part of our jobs? How burdensome? Is the effort recognized?
How is persuasion related to personality type?
Are there good articles on filtering? [see reserve]
Is credibility best established through relationships rather than expertise?
What kinds of filtering services are available today?
