180 Notes
Day 24
11/23/98

Project presentation:  McGrath-Zutshi on Dec 2; Adams-McCullough on Dec 7

1. One minute papers
Big Point
Printed books may become historical oddity
Technology changes (defines?) the way we write (communicate).
Not just paper, but film too (Lucus’ new Star Wars movie ONLY exists in digital form)
Phone book is like a DNS (domain name server)
Readers can get more involved with electronic books
Electronic offers possibility of auto translation on the fly
The practical and logistical inertia of print on paper will maintain it.

Questions
Will technology change language (more global?  More iconic?)
In what areas will electronic texts dominate first?
What is a good compromise of print and electronic (computer+printer)? CrossPad
What other I/O devices will be used in computing?
Is electronic publishing changing author or editor or both?
Why can’t we search on symbols?
Does the shift from telephone to email have similar implications for personal comm?
What are the generational effects of electronic comm?

2. Speeches: Vickie Edrington, Caroline Thomas

3. Discuss web structure assignment:
Site and Page general
What is a web page?  A web site?  Is it a communication act?
What is the size of a web site?
How is a web page like a page in a book or magazine? Different?
What are the relationships among pages and site?  Pages and organization?  Among sites within an organization?  Among sites across organizations?

Site and Page specific
How is the page situated in a site?  In an institution or individual?
What is the mission of the site?  The page? Links out? (index vs info node)
Who is the audience for the site?
What does the design communicate?

Page
Page Function: inform, direct, attract, label/identify, overview (TOC), service (e.g., search)

Page Layout
Symmetry?
Order/Flow (top down and left to right most common)
Fit (on screen)

Page Objects
Text (title, paragraph, etc.),
Images (still, lines/borders, dynamic, icon),
Links (internal, external; behavior [e.g., email]; note the anchor can be text or image),
Input forms (note: requires commitment of reply),
Dynamics (animations, movies, audios, mouseovers, popups/pulldowns, scripts)

Objects have specialized attributes (size, color, behavior, etc.)

Design Issues
Simple, elegant, clean vs informative:  Are these incompatible approaches?
Love graphics/motion vs hate graphics/motion
How does the organization influence design?  The audience?
How does state of technology influence design?
How does culture/context influence design?

3. discuss Turoff (group 2)
a survey of group CMC systems pre 1990
Factors in a taxonomy of group comm
Group problem solving (orientation, evaluation, solution)
Individual problem solving (orientation, exploration, evaluation)
 Meta processes (regulation, facilitation, social-emotional)
 Objects of discourse
 Dimensions of human comm
 Other factors
Outcome variables (consensus, agreement, quality, confidence, comprehension, efficiency, commitment, satisfaction)

5. One-minute paper
What was the big point you learned in class today?
What is the main, unanswered question you leave class with today?
