Use of Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT

You may use Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as ChatGPT to help you learn the course material. However, you should be careful with the responses you receive. ChatGPT can provide inaccurate or misleading information even if the response sounds completely reasonable. You are ultimately responsible for all answers you provide on assignments and exams.

You should treat ChatGPT that same as you would treat information written on someone else’s website. In this respect, you must follow the rules below:<\P>

  1. You cannot copy/paste responses from ChatGPT and present them as your own words. In other words, you must internalize ChatGPT’s response and summarize it using your own words.
  2. If you use ChatGPT for an assignment or exam, you must provide a short paragraph explaining how you used it.
  3. When answering a question in an assignment or exam, ask yourself: Would I be able to explain my answer if I were asked to explain it “live”? If the answer is “no”, then you are misusing the generative AI tool.

Failure to abide by these rules will be considered a violation of the UNC Honor Code.
