Research Interests

I conduct research in Information Retrieval (IR), a field concerned with designing, developing, and evaluating interactive systems that help people find information. I conduct research in three main sub-areas of IR: (1) aggregated search, (2) supporting users with complex information-seeking tasks, and (3) voice-enabled search.

The goal of aggregated search is to provide search across many different heterogeneous systems, or verticals, from a unified interface. From the system side, I develop methods for predicting which verticals to present and where to present them in response to a query. From the human side, I run user studies to better understand search and preference behavior in different situations and with different aggregated search interfaces.

I also study how search task complexity influences search behaviors and outcomes, and develop tools and interfaces to support searchers with complex tasks.

Finally, I study how people formulate information needs in spoken versus textual queries, and develop techniques to reformulate spoken queries in order to improve their retrieval effectiveness.

In general, I am interested in interactive information retrieval, human-computer interaction, machine learning, and text data mining.
