Philosophy
According to the SLIS Catalog Description of Courses, LSIS 5180 is focused on the
... roles performed by public libraries in meeting educational, informational, recreational, and cultural needs.
However, in order to more fully understand the role of the public library, one might well consider the words of Kathleen de la Peña McCook:
... in order for libraries to survive as an institution, we must hold onto our past, as we reach for the future.
For LSIS 5180, this means we will begin with a reflection of how the institution has developed, some consideration of the varying contexts in which it exists today, and will evolve into an ongoing discussion of the roles mentioned above.
