This is a selective list of standard current bibliographic
reference tools. The call numbers are
for works in the SILS library unless otherwise designated. Libraries and call

otherwise, all SILS numbers are found in the SILS reference collection.

Published annually, ABPR records titles for books published
and distributed in the United States. Excluded are federal and other government
publications, subscription books, dissertations, quarterlies and other periodicals,
pamphlets under 49 pages, and specialized publications of a transitory nature
or those intended as advertising. The
four sections of ABPR include: a main
section arranged by Dewey Decimal Classification, an Adult Fiction and Juvenile
Fiction section with two indexes, an author and title section, and a Subject
Guide section.
Books in Print (BIP). New York: R. R. Bowker, 1948- . Annual. and BIP

An annual publication BIP lists all in-print and forthcoming
titles from 30,000 U.S. publishers, listing some 80,000 titles. Volumes 1-3 are arranged alphabetically by
an author index. Volumes 4-6 are alphabetically
arranged by title index. Volume 7
contains Out of Print and Out of Stock Indefinitely titles. Volume 8 contains information on all
publishers whose titles are listed in the other volumes. Indexing hardbound, paperbound, trade books,
textbooks, adult and juvenile books, this volume is a must in all
libraries. Supplement published six
months after the annual edition.
CD-ROM/online versions combines many of the print titles such as Books Out of Print and Paperbound Books in Print.

This 4 volume subject guide
is a companion to BIP. Published
annually, it lists all in print titles with the exclusion of fiction,
literature, poetry, and drama by one author.
Approximately 65,000 LOC subject headings comprise the subject
guide. Easy-to-read entries include
pertinent bibliographic information such as number of volumes, series
information, and the type of binding. Also included is a publishers and
distributors’ abbreviation list.

CBI is a permanent record
of accurate, complete and timely information on English-language books
published each year around the world.
It offers entries for adult and juvenile fiction and non-fiction,
hardcover and paper bound editions.
Author, title and subject access are provided in a single alphabet.

A useful tool that can
address the advanced information inquiries.
This is a cumulative list of books published since Summer 1989 and books
to come November through March 1990.
Aside from the minuscule print, this source is divided by Library of
Congress subject headings alphabetically.
A key to new publishers and distributors with address and phone numbers
as well as subject, title and author indexes.

A novice embarking on book
publishing would welcome this source in any library collection. Grouped into
fifteen general categories LMP is the most comprehensive source comprising all
aspects of the vast book publishing industry.
Separated by bright yellow tabs, some of the categories featured are
electronic publishing, rights and representatives and book paper merchants,
etc. A directory that is useful and
pertinent.

This classic retrospective
bibliography is considered a keystone to American bibliographies and is basic
to any large collection. Arrangement is
by chronology according to dates of publication. Included are author, subject,
printer and publisher indexes. Each
entry includes full name of author, birth and death dates, full title,
publisher, date, paging, size and location of at least one copy in American
libraries.

A most interesting
catalogue of books published in the U.S. from January 1861 to January 1866,
inclusive of dates of publications, size, price, and publisher’s name. The supplement contains pamphlets, sermons
and addresses on the Civil War, arranged alphabetically by author/title. There are no subject classifications,
however it differs from the American
Bibliography in dates of published material as well as a more detailed type
data provided.

Index to Joseph Sabin’s Dictionary of Books Relating to America. Metuchen,

Three volumes comprising
over 100,000 entries of bibliographic information indexing author-titles in the
United States. Its purpose is to guide
the user to entries in Bibliotheca
Americana. Features pseudonyms of
authors and anonymous works of authors have been made visible. There are cross-references but it leaves
quite a bit to be desired in what its purpose and function is.

Deals with American
publications from dates listed.
Alphabetically arranged with inclusion of periodicals published during
this time. 24,000 titles comprise this
two volume set with this edition featuring the original works published in 1849
and the supplement in 1850. Out of
print titles are noted. Law books
classed separately.
Sabin, Joseph. Bibliotheca
Americana. Dictionary of Books Relating to America from its Discovery to the

The author’s scope was
intended to include everything dealing with political, governmental, military,
economic, social and religious history in the Western Hemisphere from the
discovery of the New World to 1929. It
is alphabetically arranged under authors and for anonymous writers by subject
or titles of books. This retrospective
bibliography comprises fifteen volumes.
It’s function is quite similar to American
Catalogue of Books but it is dated and its scope is different as well as
more varied.

This bibliography attempts
to fill in the gaps of the national bibliography created by James Kelly’s American Catalogue and O.A. Roorbach’s Bibliotheca Americana. It is an in-depth bibliography comprising 19
volumes which provide guidance to contemporary materials of this era. Inclusive are Printers, Publishers and
Booksellers index with a geographical index as well.

This is a two volume
alphabetical inventory of early American printing. It attempts to correct and revise the inconsistencies of Charles
Evans’ American Bibliography, and it
adds over 10,000 titles discovered since the publication of Evans’ set. There are 49, 197 entries which are arranged
alphabetically by author and short title.
This work is used to eliminate “ghosts” which Evans recorded without
seeing an actual copy of the work.

the equivalent of our Books in Print which details approximately 500,000 titles
from 14,500 publishers relevant to the British book trade. Sequentially arranged alphabetically. Inclusive are important Table of Book Sizes,
directory of publishers and Guides to British books, as well as author, title
and subject index.

Over 35,000 entries in this
guide directs the user to the entire field of print and broadcast media. The
new 1990 edition features not only newspapers, magazines, etc., inclusive are
also radio stations, television stations and cable systems. Three volumes comprise the United States
-Canada, indexes, statistical tables and maps.
Has ease-of-use features that are similar to Ulrich’s format.
Magazines for Libraries. New York: Bowker,

The 9th edition represents
a total revision of 6,500 periodicals that are considered the best and most
useful for all types of libraries as well as the general reader. Selection was made by consultants who were
subject experts in their respected fields.
All titles were considered, evaluated then deleted or retained with 95%
of the annotations rewritten. Subject
and title indexes with scope, purpose and audience for periodicals. A must for any collection.
Standard Periodical Directory. 1964/1965- [Davis Ref., SILS Ref. Z6951.S78]
This most comprehensive
source gives data on 65,000 periodicals in the United States and Canada. It
lists more than four times the titles in Gale
and Ulrich’s. Included are all types of periodicals such
as trade journals, newsletters, government publications, directories, ethnic
publications, etc. These are updated regularly and deletions are made for those
whose publication has ceased. Subject categories are listed alphabetically and
included is editorial descriptions which focus on scope, purpose, and
content. Detailed information on
entries is given as well as cross references to the subject index. This source is useful as a backup for Ulrich’s because it includes types of
work not found in that directory.
Ulrich’s International Periodical Directory, New York: Bowker,
1932- . Biennial [Davis Ref. Z6941.U5; SILS CD-ROM]
The 33rd edition of Ulrich’s Directory contains information
on more than 100,000 serials published throughout the world, including 2,131
serials available online, 172 serials available on CD-ROM. A thorough and
comprehensive directory, this volume is an asset to any type of library. It is not limited to American publishers and
is updated every year. Titles are
arranged alphabetically under about 550 subject headings. The second volume has a title index and a
list of works no longer published.

Monthly compilation of abstracts of doctoral dissertations submitted by
approximately 400 cooperating universities.
Most U.S. universities are covered as well as many in the U.K. and
elsewhere. The main list is arranged
alphabetically by subject field, then by university. Each issue includes subject and author indexes which cumulate in
issue 12. There are separate volumes for (A) the humanities and social sciences
and (B) the sciences and engineering.
Available online and ondisk.
Dissertations are available on order from UMI in either hardcopy or
microfilm.
