International Index to Music Periodicals. Ann Arbor, Mich.: Chadwyck-Healey. 1996—.

Online at http://eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/ - Select International Index to Music Periodicals.

This index is important to search in terms of its international coverage. Over 400 music periodicals are represented here. While the majority of its content is indexed from 1996 forward, it does have some retrospective coverage going as far back as 1874. The interface has many fields in which to enter text for a search. It also has a checkbox to limit by peer-reviewed articles.

Music Index: A Subject-Author Guide to Music Periodical Literature. Hempseed, Sonja J., ed. Warren, Mich.: Harmonie Park Press, 1949—.

ISSN 0027-4348. Found in Music Library Reference [ML118.M84]. Also available online at http://eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/ - Select Music Index. Online coverage 1979—.

A particularly good index to search. Available both online and in print (updated several times annually), Music Index covers over 690 music periodicals from around the world. The online interface has an “Expert” and a “Basic” searching option. “Basic” is single-field “Google-style” with optional Boolean, proximity, and wildcard operators. “Expert” also includes multiple search fields, sorting, and limiters.

RILM (Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale) Abstracts of Music Literature. New York: Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale, 1967—.

ISSN 0033-6955. Found in Music Library Reference Shelf [ML1.I83]. Also available online at http://eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/ - Select RILM Music Abstracts.

RILM covers all aspects of music and contains information in 202 languages. The index covers all formats of scholarly research (including books, dissertations, catalogs, bibliographies, and films in addition to periodicals) and contains abstracts in English. The online interface to this index is not particularly attractive - RILM is not even mentioned on the website and it does not allow for a very specific initial search in terms of its available fields. It might be worth using the print version of this index in conjunction with the online version to increase the chances of finding the desired articles.
