Manning Hall, located at the heart of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the home of the School of Information and Library Science. The school of Library Science, as it was originally called, was founded by librarian and educator Louis Round Wilson in 1931.
As the site of the university's law school from 1923 to 1968, Manning Hall was named for the school's second law professor, John Manning. The School of Library Science moved to Manning Hall from its previous location in Wilson Library in 1970. In 1987, the school enlarged its program and name to include Information Science.
The pen and ink artwork was drawn by Martha Miller Brandis (MSLS, 1964), wife of the former dean of Law, Henry Brandis, Jr.
